Full text 359 — Le salut à Charlemagne. Aix-la-Chapelle, 7 décembre. En une seule et même journée, que de choses vues et entendues! Quel tumulte d’impressions, de visions assaille notre mémoire ! Ce matin, vers 1o heures, des troupes fran¬ çaises faisaient leur entrée solennelle à Aix. Comme nous suivions les troupes marchant dans la direction de la cathédrale, nous eûmes soudain un spectacle extraordinaire. Devant le théâtre, la statue équestre de Guillaume ler avait subi une étrange toilette. Un voile noir recou¬ vrait la tête de l’inoubliable grand-père, moulant son casque à pointe, un autre voile encapuchon¬ nait la tête du cheval. Le fondateur de l’empire ressemblait à un condamné qui allait subir le supplice du garrot. Contre le monument se dressait encore l’échelle rouge des pompiers de la ville qui avaient habillé la statue. Une demi¬ heure après, un seul et vaste voile dérobait complètement le monument aux regards. Nous ne savions comment interpréter cet impression¬ nant camouflage. On nous assura que c’était
